Community investment

Traditionally, many businesses only contributed to the community through charitable donations. However, successful companies are now investing in long term community partnerships and linking community causes to commercial objectives. They are recognising the value of measuring the impact that these contributions have, not only for the community, but also in the business.

Effective management requires that corporate community investment (CCI) is planned, monitored and evaluated. Corporate Citizenship can help you define your strategy and its link to business objectives.

We work with clients on all aspects of community investment, both in home markets and around the world:

  • identifying focus areas and effective partners, brokering relationships if needed;
  • reviewing and refining programmes, though our CCI ‘health check’ and benchmarking;
  • employee engagement, including volunteering schemes and ‘charity of the year’ selection;
  • impact measurement, especially for flagship projects, using innovative tools such as social return on investment;
  • working with commercial departments, on cause related marketing campaigns and ‘bottom of the pyramid’ outreach.

The team at Corporate Citizenship has long experience in providing strategic advice to community affairs and CSR managers, often drawn from running programmes in-house. We developed and now manage LBG (London Benchmarking Group), a group of over 100 leading UK and international companies that benchmark their performance on corporate community involvement. In the USA we manage the LBG USA Group, bringing together US based companies to implement the LBG model.

Our Community Panel is the only standing panel that offers a statistically robust way of canvassing the views of local communities.

We have pioneered the study, establishment and strategic advancement of corporate foundations in the UK, as well as conducting strategic reviews and research of both funding and giving for long established foundations.

Our work with leading companies on linking social responsibility to human resource management goes back more than a decade. We also work with foundations and charities to develop their strategies for partnering with businesses.

  • “Having an independent professional team reviewing our strategy created a lot of opportunity for better benchmarking and evaluation of our CCI programme. We wouldn’t have gone to anybody else.” Rosemarie Gardner, npower
