Scottish & Newcastle

Scottish & Newcastle is an international brewer with strong positions in 15 countries in Europe and Asia, exporting to more than 60 countries around the world. Its key brands include John Smiths, Kronenbourg, Fosters and Baltika.

We are retained by S&N to provide ongoing strategic advice and support and to manage the social reporting process. We have developed a more international scope for reporting as the company evolves from a mainly UK focused business to one dominant in overseas markets. The indicator-led methodology has moved towards a closer alignment with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting guidelines, something which S&N will continue to develop further in subsequent reports. Since 2005, reporting has been principally web-based, with innovations such as a blog to ensure the report remains relevant and responsive to stakeholders.

We have also been working with S&N on issues of responsible drinking. We helped S&N to raise the profile of this issue internally and ensure that it is reflected in the group’s marketing strategy. Other initiatives have included setting up a Director-level project team to develop a responsible drinking strategy for the group. We have also undertaken a Europe-wide review of community investment activities across the group, and has been working with S&N to implement a community investment strategy which will reflect the business’ commitment to supporting responsible drinking.

As a result of our support, S&N maintains a strong position in the ‘Top 100 Companies that Count’ measured by BITC and published annually by the Sunday Times. Its community programme received the highest rating of ‘platinum’ in the new BITC Community Index.
